MLP Funds Funk Zone Public Art Program, Announces Completion of Mural by Local Artist

Mesa Lane Partners and The Arts Fund are excited to announce the completion of a mural in the Funk Zone that is a first of its kind. Located on the Quonset hut of Stand Up Paddle Sports at 121 Santa Barbara St, the new mural titled, Long Days, Short Year, was executed by artist, R. Nelson Parrish. It is the first mural facilitated by The Arts Fund for the recently approved Funk Zone Public Art Program.

“The Arts Fund would like to give a special thank you to Mesa Lane Partners for providing the seed funding to jump start the program, as well as the many local arts advocates involved in the creation of the program,” said Marcello Ricci, Program Director at the Santa Barbara Arts Fund.

Long Days, Short Year is a translation of color, motion and the passion for the hustle. Inspired by Minimalist artists, Santa Barbara light and geography, and the history of national parks the pieces pulls threads from disparate dialogues to weave an abstract narrative designed to engage and inspire. The first of the artist’s career, the mural was created solely using Montana Cans spray paint, purposefully to connect and challenge the discourse surrounding “street art.”

The goal of the Funk Zone Public Art Program is to establish locations around the Funk Zone for public art projects such as murals in an effort to keep art alive and maintain the creative signature of the neighborhood. The Funk Zone Public Art Program, as approved by the City, allows property owners and tenants to work directly with The Arts Fund and selected artists on the art of their choice, so long as it adheres to the program’s guidelines.

As street art is intended to be temporary, turnover of murals is encouraged at least every one to three years. The goal is that in time the murals and public art projects will add to the Funk Zone’s already dynamic environment to attract a larger audience for the arts.
